Those implementing the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR) were seeking updated guidance on ensuring strengthened gender-sensitivity and the needs of disadvantaged groups in their security practices, leading to the publication of the “IGT Companion Tool – Operationalizing the Voluntary Principles Through the Lens of Protecting and Respecting the Unique Needs and Rights of Women and Other Disadvantaged Groups”. To help practitioners better understand and utilize the IGT Companion Tool in practical settings, a training model was developed by consultancy firm Stratos (now ERM) and VPI NGO Member IMPACT.
This comprehensive training provides a structured learning focusing on each module in the IGT Companion Tool, and comes with a Participant Workbook featuring a real-life scenario and case study as exercises to contextualize challenges and opportunities in the implementation of the VPSHR.

The IGT Companion Tool was launched by the VPI in 2023 and serves as a complementary resource document to the existing Implementation Guidance Tools (IGT). The Companion Tool equips organizations with a number of important concepts and steps to better identify and respond to potential risks and negative impacts that their security operations may have on women and other disadvantaged groups, along with practical tools, informative case studies, examples and links to additional resources.
